Poetry of Benga

HellenMarcus

For Marcus Antonie and Hellen Kimaru. I penned this on their Wedding day (October 11, 2014) and gave it life through an animated performance…as I was trained by my grand mother, Masela dana – the greatest narrator I have known.

Hellen,
Uncontrollably…
the juices of your heart are flowing
upon the lips of the soul of great Marcus Antonie…
nourish him with your smile
for love is as simple as a dimple
natural and lasting beyond the aisle
love is a letter, love is a digit
the earlier the better, you got to give it
with this poetry of benga, I wish to crown it!

Marcus,
I know not much about love
but this verse is inspired by the tempo of your heartbeat:
two love birds sing in the village of Kanyidoto
and the skies burst in flames
red like the roses, shinning like the face of your lover
a new dawn of true love.
nourish her with your smile
for love is as simple as a dimple
natural and lasting beyond the aisle
love is a letter, love is a digit
the earlier the better, you got to give it
with this poetry of benga, I wish to crown it!

Hellen,
Spring came with many a beautiful thing;
the mightiness of Marcus
the freshness of the roses
the natural perfume for your noses,
the aroma of marital trust guided by your steps
from the moonlit night of the paradise in Murang’a
to the serene night of Kisumo
covered in Nilotic dark clouds that from time to time feed the lake of Lolwe
the lake that nourished the soul and flesh of Marcus Antonie,
the lake of Lolwe awaits to receive you,
so may you nourish each other with a smile
for love is as simple as a dimple
natural and lasting beyond the aisle
love is a letter, love is a digit
the earlier the better, you got to give it
with this poetry of benga, I wish to crown it!
